Accelerated BSN Program - FAQ
« View Accelerated BSN Overview
How do I know if I am eligible to apply? What makes this program different from a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program?
The UMDNJ-SN Accelerated BSN program option is for those with a non-nursing baccalaureate or higher degree. It combines intense nursing theory and clinical courses over four consecutive semesters with previously earned general education and prerequisite credits to satisfy the requirements for a baccalaureate in nursing degree. Graduates of the program will have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to be eligible for the licensing exam (NCLEX-RN) to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Other program descriptions are available on the Johnson & Johnson Discover Nursing website
Can I take the ABSN Program part-time?
The Accelerated BSN Program is a 15-month, full time program. It is very demanding of students’ time and energy. It is strongly recommended that ABSN students are not employed while enrolled in this program. Due to clinical scheduling, students must be available five days a week. Advance notice is provided by individual instructors.
Can I still apply while finishing classes?
All prerequisite requirements should be completed prior to applying. However, some applicants may want to be considered while they are in the process of completing up to two prerequisite course requirements and BLS certification. Applicants should supply SN Student Enrollment Services with copies of scheduled prerequisite classes and/or confirmation of enrollment in a BLS certification course. Applications with prerequisite courses in progress will not be reviewed until after a mid-term grade report from the applicant’s instructor is received by SN Student Enrollment Services.
Can I apply now and have my transcripts and recommendations sent later?
Yes. However, it is best to avoid long delays in sending supporting documentation as this will postpone a review of your application.
How long will it take to process an application?
Applications are reviewed following the priority deadline. Complete applications are reviewed first.
Do you offer scholarships or financial aid?
The UMDNJ School of Nursing realizes that many students need financial assistance to help with the costs of their education. Depending on existing loans, applicants may not qualify or may be limited in the amount they can receive for the ABSN Program. The University uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal FAFSA. Applicants should anticipate their needs and plan to apply for financial aid prior to acceptance into the program. For more information, visit the UMDNJ Financial Aid website
Other options include partnering with a hospital or other type of nursing facility for a contract of service in exchange for tuition reimbursement. In addition, there are other local organizations that may provide scholarships. Attend an information session to get more information.
Where should I send my application? Do I send my application to Newark even though I want to apply for the Stratford campus?
All applications are processed by the SN Student Enrollment Services on the Newark Campus.
Applications should be mailed to:
UMDNJ-School of Nursing
Student Enrollment Services
65 Bergen Street, Suite 149,
Newark, NJ 07101-1709
Can I apply to both campuses?
No. Applications can only be submitted for one campus.
I missed the priority and regular deadline. Can I still apply?
Yes, but there is a time restriction. Contact SN Student Enrollment Services or a recruiter first for space availability before sending your application.
I will lose my health insurance coverage if I quit my job to do this full-time program. Is health insurance available to students?
Health insurance is available for purchase to students through UMDNJ and is included in the total program cost. Students may add family members to their policy for an additional cost or opt out of this coverage if they have private health insurance coverage through a parent or spouse. For more information, click on the link for UMDNJ student insurance: www.umdnj.edu/shiweb/
Are there any technology requirements for the program?
The University has purchased a web-based testing program from Assessment Technology Institute that is designed to assess and reinforce the knowledge gained in the program in order to prepare students to take the NCLEX examination for licensure upon graduation. This program is included in the cost of tuition and fees.
The use of a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) device is required for all ABSN students. Students can use their own device or purchase one through the UMDNJ Campus bookstores. The required nursing software is also available through the bookstore. More information about this will be communicated upon acceptance into the program.
