Acute/Critical Care Nurse Practitioner

 

The Acute/Critical Care Nurse Practitioner MSN program is based at the Newark and Stratford campuses. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) certification examination offered by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center or the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Certification Corporation. Graduates are eligible for certification as an Acute Critical Care Nurse Practitioner and for certification in the State of New Jersey as advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority.

Role and Qualifications: The Advanced Practice Nurse in Acute/ Critical Care receives a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and advanced clinical experience in the management of acute and critically ill patients in a variety of practice settings. The APN is distinguished by graduate preparation, supervised clinical practicum experience, and a depth of knowledge which supports advanced clinical practice and leadership in nursing.

Scope of Practice: The APN in Acute/Critical Care assesses complex and acutely ill patients in a variety of settings. Using the health history and physical assessment, the APN independently, and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, develops a plan of care for the acute/critically ill patient. A culturally competent plan of care is developed using diagnostic reasoning and evidence-based practice.
