Dual Nurse Midwifery & Adult Nurse Practitioner MSN Program

 

The dual Nurse Midwifery & Adult NP MSN Program is based at UMDNJ’s Newark and Stratford campuses. Graduates are eligible for certification to practice as an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Midwife. Role and Qualifi cations: The Advanced Practice Nurse in Adult Health and Midwifery has a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and advanced preparation in the assessment and management of changing health patterns in women and adults across the life span.

Scope of Practice: The APN in Adult Health and Midwifery provides primary and reproductive care to women across the lifespan from adolescence to senescence including childbearing in diverse practice and health care delivery settings. The APN emphasizes a wellness paradigm and implements a scientific, evidenced-based rationale for practice.

Role Functions: The Adult Health Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Midwife will:

  • Perform comprehensive health assessments, develop differential diagnoses, and mange chronic health problems, acute exacerbations of chronic health problems, and episodic illnesses for adults.
  • Develop and document management plans to render diagnostic and dispositional judgments.
  • Consult, refer, transfer and collaborate with other disciplines involved in the delivery of care when medical conditions warrant.
  • Implement the plan of care informed by best evidence, patient preference, and clinical judgment.
  • Provide therapeutic intervention and education for clients and family
  • Promote, maintain and restore health, prevent or minimize disabilities, and promote death with dignity. Manage the care of the healthy childbearing woman throughout the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum period. Manages the care of the normal newborn.
  • Assume leadership, consultation, and advocacy roles in professional practice, health care policy, education, research, and nursing science.
