The Family Health Nurse Practitioner MSN program is based at UMDNJ’s Newark and Stratford campuses. Graduates
are eligible for certification to practice as Family Health Nurse Practitioners and for certification in the State of New
Jersey as advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority.
Role and Qualifications: The Advanced Practice Nurse in Family Health has a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
degree and advanced preparation in the assessment and management of changing health needs of families across the
lifespan. The APN is distinguished by graduate preparation, supervised clinical practicum experience,
and a depth of knowledge which supports advanced clinical practice and leadership in nursing.
Scope of Practice: The APN in Family Health assesses and collaboratively manages the healthcare needs of clients
across the lifespan, practices in diverse settings, and implements a scientific, evidence-based practice. Advanced
practice is grounded in the nursing, biological, social and behavioral sciences.
