Clinical Nurse Specialist MSN Program

 

The Child - Adolescent Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist MSN program is based on UMDNJ’s Newark and Stratford campuses. Graduates are eligible for certifi cation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as clinical nurse specialists in child and adolescent psychiatric/mental health nursing and for certifi cation in the State of New Jersey as advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority.

Role and Qualifications: The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in Child - Adolescent Psychiatric and Mental Health has a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and provides mental health promotion and illness prevention strategies for children, adolescents and their families experiencing acute and chronic psychiatric problems.

Scope of Practice: The APN in Psychiatric and Mental Health is prepared to provide comprehensive mental and physical assessment, formulate diagnoses, and develop therapeutic treatment regimens for children and adolescents. Treatment strategies can include behavioral and play therapy, medication management and individual, family and group psychotherapy. Practice includes independent and interdependent decision making. The principles of neuropsychiatry and their application to assessment and differential diagnoses are incorporated into the advanced practice role, as is a grounding in research, consultation, supervision, case management, and administration.
