Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - Adult Focus MSN Program

 

The Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - Adult Focus MSN program is based at UMDNJ’s Newark and Stratford campuses. Graduates are eligible for certifi cation as Adult Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists or NursePractitioners by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center and for certifi cation in the State of New Jersey as advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority.

Role and Qualifications: The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health has a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and provides mental health promotion and illness prevention strategies, assessment, and treatment services for adults, families, and groups experiencing acute and chronic emotional problems.

Scope of Practice: The APN in Psychiatric and Mental Health is prepared to provide adults with comprehensive mental and physical assessment, diagnoses and therapeutic treatment regimens. Treatment strategies can include, but are not limited to, medication management, and individual, family, and group psychotherapy. Practice includes independent and interdependent decision making and direct accountability for clinical judgment. The principles of neuropsychiatry and their application to assessment and differential diagnoses are incorporated into the advanced practice role, as is a grounding in research, consultation, supervision, case management, and administration.
