The UMDNJ Nurse Anesthesia Program in Newark received initial accreditation by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA) and admitted its first class in 2004. [COA contact information]
In 2008 the program was granted full re-accreditation by the COA for the maximum 10 year period. 24 students are admitted each year, with the ninth cohort entering in 2012. Our 72 credit program begins each fall semester and continues for 28 months (seven semesters) of full time study. We do not accept part-time students. Many of the MSN core courses can be transferred from other institutions (see 2011 Handbook) or taken before beginning the anesthesia program. Both of these options require approval by the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Program Director.
Watch for our annual information session which is scheduled in the Spring. It is best to submit your application in the early Fall, since we review all applications in December. The deadline for applications is December 1st for consideration for the class entering the following Fall. Applications that are incomplete at that date will not be considered until the next year. The Nurse Anesthesia Program is fortunate to have a very large applicant pool and admission is competitive. Note that the Anesthesia program has additional admission requirements beyond those listed for other MSN programs. Advice to Applicants »
The UMDNJ university wide on line application process only supports spring admissions. Therefore you will not see anesthesia as an option and cannot use this method of submission. Please print a paper application »

When do you make selections?
We interview candidates in January and make our selection in early February. Applications are reviewed and a select number of candidates are invited to interview before our admissions committee based upon academic transcripts, references, and critical care experience.
During the interview, the candidate’s intelligence, critical thinking, communication and problem solving skills will be assessed. The extent of their critical care nursing knowledge base and their commitment to becoming a nurse anesthetist will be evaluated.
