Description

This 4 hour workshop is designed to provide the attendee with education in the field of cardiology and promote understanding and critical thinking skills in the physical diagnosis of heart disease. The physical exam and auscultation component of a thorough cardiac assessment will be the focus. Each attendee will be provided with a wireless headset so that previously recorded patients with a variety of heart sounds can be examined. The workshop will include normal heart sounds (S1 and S2), as well as normal 3rd heart sounds. Additionally, time will be spent demonstrating extra heart sounds, such as S3, S4, sounds of aortic, mitral, and pericardial disease.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop the attendee should be able to:

• Identify the auscultatory process
• Recognize normal heart sounds
• Recognize S3 and S4 Gallops and understand their meaning
• Describe the abnormal sounds associated with disease of the mitral and aortic valves
• Describe sounds associated with pericardial disease

 

Schedule

• Normal heart sounds and normal 3rd heart sounds (60 minutes)
• S3, S4, and Extra sounds (60 minutes)
• Aortic and Mitral Valve disease (55 minutes)
• Mitral Valve Prolapse and pericardial disease (50 minutes)
• Question and answer (25 minutes)
