Description

A plethora of soft and hard tissue conditions may present in the oral and maxillofacial structures. While many conditions primarily affect the oral cavity, others may present as manifestations of systemic disease affecting organs far from head and neck region. Nurse practitioners are in the position to recognize oral manifestations of diagnosed or subjectively silent systemic disease and contribute to its timely recognition and/or appropriate management. In this course, illustrative examples of oral manifestations of systemic conditions are provided and the potential role of primary care practitioners in the over all management is emphasized.

Objectives:

In this course, participants learn about:

  • Local and systemic conditions with orofacial manifestations such as hereditary, hematologic, infectious, endocrinopathic, immune-mediated, dermatologic, granulomatous, cardiovascular, pulmonary and metastatic conditions.
  • Diagnostic evaluation of patients with oral signs and symptoms of systemic disease.
  • Potential impact of these manifestations on oral care.
  • Effective therapeutic strategies for symptomatic relief of painful orofacial manifestations of systemic etiology.
  • Follow-up regimen and documentation process
