Comprehensive Systematic Review
Systematic reviews form the foundation for evidence-based practice in healthcare. The purpose of this course is to systematically identify, appraise, and synthesize available evidence relevant to a particular practice question. The course will be facilitated by the use of data extraction, appraisal and synthesis software as well as citation management systems. Meta-analysis, a merging of statistical results from a number of studies with the goal of discovering consistencies and differences between studies, and meta-synthesis, merged qualitative results from a number of related studies with the goal of informing the understanding of a phenomenon will be covered.
COMPUTER WORKSHOP - File Management (Windows Files & Folders)
This class is designed for two groups of people: new users who have very basic computer skills or people who have been using a PC for a while and are still confused about folders. Create and use folders in Windows, in Microsoft Word and in Microsoft Excel. Practice finding files, and moving and copying files between different folders. Learn more Windows topics such as: adding items to the Start menu, creating Shortcut icons on the Desktop, using the Recycle Bin, changing the background of the Desktop screen and setting your computer preferences so that your computer is easier for you to use.
Disaster Preparedness for First Responders
This all-day seminar for nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and other emergency personnel addresses topics including: the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS), weapons of mass destruction, psychological aspects of terrorism, pandemics, and surge capacity. Speakers include Dr. Mary Kamienski, UMDNJ-SN Faculty; Joe Crouchman, Paramedic & Bioterrorism Educator; and Mario Pozo, Assistant Director of EMS at LibertyHealth. Attendees will participate in a hands-on experience working with manikins and surge capacity equipment.
Drug-Induced Disease
This seminar explores the unintended and often unexpected effects of drugs as causative agents of disease. Participants will learn techniques in identification, management, prevention and detection of several drug-induced diseases using a case-based approach.

The New Jersey Center for Evidence-Based Practice at UMDNJ - SN works with researchers, clinicians and managers to promote the development and dissemination of evidence-based “best practices” in critical areas of healthcare. The Fitzgerald Nurse Practitioner Certification Exam Review for Adult, Gerontological, or Family NP

Microscopy for APNs

Precipitous Delivery Technique
If you work in a health care facility or provide a service where women may be involved, you may be expected to become a "stork". Almost any environment /department can be the place of birth and the staff, within these areas, have the probability of participating in a birth. Of course in an Emergency Department, or an OB/Gyn setting, the probability increases exponentially. How to establish priorities for a safe birth for mother and baby will be discussed to increase confidence when such an emergent situation arises.
Prescribing Controlled Dangerous Substances
This one-day course for Advanced Practice Nurses who have prescriptive privileges meets the six-hour mandate for APNs to be licensed to prescribe and manage controlled drug substances. Topics include pharmacologic properties of controlled drugs substances, their indications and appropriate use, and the New Jersey State licensure requirements related to prescribing controlled drug substances.
Psychopharmacology for APNs & RNs
This course will assist the psychiatric/mental health professional understand the neurobiological basis of psychiatric disorders and be able to apply the pharmacology of available medications to treatment strategies for these mental illnesses. History of Reiki:
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of energy healing and self-improvement which aims to treat the whole person, including body, emotions, mind and spirit . It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques. A very simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve our own and our patients' health and enhance quality of life.

Shoulder Dystocia
Shoulder Dystocia is a true obstetric emergency. It is not predictable and no specific management has proven to be superior. The pathophysiology of Shoulder Dystocia relates to the impaction of the anterior fetal shoulder behind the maternal symphysis which prevents the completion of the birth process. Shoulder Dystocia is recognized when the birth does not occur by the usual methods; when gentle downward pressure on the fetal head fails to affect the birth of the shoulders; and when completion of the birth requires additional obstetric maneuvers. Shoulder Dystocia is a catastrophic obstetric emergency and a medicolegal nightmare.

This course is for individuals who work in healthcare, and have contact with Spanish speaking people. This course provides introduction to Spanish, including colloquial terms that are commonly used in the clinical setting. It is designed to assist the provider to effectively communicate with Spanish speaking patients and associates.
Surveillance: Update for School Nurses
This two-hour seminar for school nurses working in elementary and secondary education will use a case-based approach to teach school nurses to identify the signs and symptoms of an impending epidemic in the school system.
Telehealth, Telenursing, Robotics, and Virtual modes of Healthcare Delivery
This presentation will provide an overview of the use of advanced technology in the community-based setting. Participants will discuss complex procedures employed to care for the acutely and critically ill patient at home and address the use of new telecommunication technologies.
Trauma Course (2-day course)
This two-day course is provides core-level knowledge required to care for the patient with traumatic injury. Topics include: mechanism of injury, thermal injury, fluid resuscitation, abdominal trauma, thoracic trauma, traumatic brain injury, spinal trauma, orthopedic and vascular injuries, and trauma in special populations. The course addresses nursing care for each subject area, including assessment, monitoring, and psychosocial care; medical and surgical intervention; diagnostic tests; and the use of specialized equipment.
Wound Closure/Suture Workshop
This course teaches wound assessment skills for nurses and promotes understanding of the wound healing process. It also covers various types of suture materials and indications for their use. Participants will gain hands-on practice of basic suturing techniques.
Women's Health Initiative Symposium 2009
Women’s Health has now been recognized as a specialty area. It has been accepted that the presentation, progress and outcome of disease are unique to women. Commonly accepted male symptomatology are not representative of the onset of disease in women.
