Review the basic principles of 12-lead EKG interpretations. Topics include: lead placement, wave interpretation, axis deviation and the identification and interpretation of normal and abnormal 12-lead tracings.

Aromatherapy for the Healthcare provider

In collaboration with ICAM (Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine).

Are you interested in learning more about aromatherapy and its power of healing? Come to this comprehensive one day course where you will learn about the use of essential oils, safety, protocols and science. Each participant will get a kit to create 3 aroma blends: a room mister, inhaler and body oil.

Art of Diagnosing

Making the correct diagnosis is critical in effective management of the primary care patient. Learn ways to ensure that you are treating and caring for your patients utilizing the “gold standards” of care. Come explore the case-based approach to creating your differential diagnosis and providing optimal care. Discussion will include chest pain, dizziness, abdominal pain, dyspnea, back pain and more.

Asthma & Allergies: More than Just Wheezes & Sneezes

The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) Expert Panel Report 3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma, presents state-of-the-art recommendations developed by a panel of asthma experts. This program discusses the pathophysiology of asthma and allergic disease and current assessment and management strategies incorporating the 2007 NAEPP Guidelines.

Basic Clinical Skills and Health Assessment

This intense, three-day course will teach you to conduct a comprehensive head-to-toe assessment, exploring all major systems; abnormal versus normal. In-depth exploration of clinical and interviewing skills and the application of the nursing process will prepare you to successfully assess and intervene.

This course meets the requirements for entry into the UMDNJ graduate nursing program and may be submitted for review by other nursing graduate programs*. This course will also update and enhance the clinical skills of nurses who are returning to clinical practice.

Basic EKG/ECG Interpretation

This 1-day course provides the participant with the basic skills necessary to easily interpret ECG rhythm strips. Learn about the electrical conduction of the heart, basic principles of dysrhythmia interpretation, nursing interventions, and treatment modalities for basic dysrhythmias. Practice sessions are included with the discussion of each dysrhythmia.

Bioterrorism Update: What the Nurse Needs to Know

Learn the skills to recognize the physical signs and symptoms in the event of a bio- terroristic attack. Increase your knowledge on identification, emergency treatment and management during this emergent event.

Comprehensive Systematic Review

Systematic reviews form the foundation for evidence-based practice in healthcare. The purpose of this course is to systematically identify, appraise, and synthesize available evidence relevant to a particular practice question. The course will be facilitated by the use of data extraction, appraisal and synthesis software as well as citation management systems. Meta-analysis, a merging of statistical results from a number of studies with the goal of discovering consistencies and differences between studies, and meta-synthesis, merged qualitative results from a number of related studies with the goal of informing the understanding of a phenomenon will be covered.

COMPUTER WORKSHOP - File Management (Windows Files & Folders)

This class is designed for two groups of people: new users who have very basic computer skills or people who have been using a PC for a while and are still confused about folders.  Create and use folders in Windows, in Microsoft Word and in Microsoft Excel.  Practice finding files, and moving and copying files between different folders.  Learn more Windows topics such as: adding items to the Start menu, creating Shortcut icons on the Desktop, using the Recycle Bin, changing the background of the Desktop screen and setting your computer preferences so that your computer is easier for you to use.

Disaster Preparedness for First Responders

This all-day seminar for nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and other emergency personnel addresses topics including: the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS), weapons of mass destruction, psychological aspects of terrorism, pandemics, and surge capacity. Speakers include Dr. Mary Kamienski, UMDNJ-SN Faculty; Joe Crouchman, Paramedic & Bioterrorism Educator; and Mario Pozo, Assistant Director of EMS at LibertyHealth. Attendees will participate in a hands-on experience working with manikins and surge capacity equipment.

Drug-Induced Disease

This seminar explores the unintended and often unexpected effects of drugs as causative agents of disease. Participants will learn techniques in identification, management, prevention and detection of several drug-induced diseases using a case-based approach.

Evidence-Based Management of Burn trauma

1. Participants will gain an understanding of assessment, resuscitation and special types of burns.

3rd Annual Evidence-Based Practice Conference

The New Jersey Center for Evidence-Based Practice at UMDNJ - SN works with researchers, clinicians and managers to promote the development and dissemination of evidence-based “best practices” in critical areas of healthcare. The center is one of the three United States collaborating centers of the international Joanna Briggs Institute.

The Fitzgerald Nurse Practitioner Certification Exam Review for Adult, Gerontological, or Family NP

Fitzgerald Health Education Associates, Inc. is a leading provider of continuing education for nurse practitioners, advanced practice and ambulatory care nurses. This seminar is two-days for those taking the ANP exam, with an additional half-day for those taking the FNP exam. A syllabus and 208- page workbook are included with the course.

IV Therapy Certification Course

This course requires self-study and attendance at a 1/2 day, in-class session that will include demonstration, review, skills lab and testing. A self-study packet for your review will be mailed to your home at least one week prior to in-class date. This course presents all the core skills needed for nurses to become IV certified. It includes a review of the circulatory system, fluid and electrolyte balance, blood administration and covers a variety of venous access devices.

Lock-Down: Update for School Nurses

Using a case-based approached, this two-hour seminar for school nurses will address the role of the school nurse in the event of a hostage or lock-down incident in an elementary or secondary school.

Microscopy for APNs

Are you doing GYN exams and would like to enhance or develop your skills in microscopy? If so this is the course for you. This half-day course will teach you the skills you need to use a microscope to identify common vaginal infections and other abnormal findings. A brief skills lab session will be provided for those interested.

Pharmacological Management of Antidepressants & Antipsychotics

This interactive, patient-centered discussion will focus on the pharmacotherapy of antidepressants and antipsychotics. It will offer a thorough explanation of the pharmacology of these two drug classifications. Monitoring parameters of efficacy and toxicity, along with recent FDA warnings about these medications, will be examined.

Pharmacological Management of the Cardiac Patient

This half-day course will discuss disease management, drug therapy and tips to assist you in providing optimal care to your cardiac patients. It will address best-practice guidelines, updates on treatments and management, and the latest evidence to help you better manage your patient with congestive heart failure and hypertension.

Pharmacotherapy to Manage Diabetes and Select Co-Morbidities

This course covers current pharmacologic therapy for management of diabetes, including insulin types and oral agents to lower blood glucose. A review of drug management for select co-morbid conditions, such as depression and peripheral neuropathy is included.

Precipitous Delivery Technique

If you work in a health care facility or provide a service where women may be involved, you may be expected to become a "stork". Almost any environment /department can be the place of birth and the staff, within these areas, have the probability of participating in a birth. Of course in an Emergency Department, or an OB/Gyn setting, the probability increases exponentially. How to establish priorities for a safe birth for mother and baby will be discussed to increase confidence when such an emergent situation arises.

Prescribing Controlled Dangerous Substances

This one-day course for Advanced Practice Nurses who have prescriptive privileges meets the six-hour mandate for APNs to be licensed to prescribe and manage controlled drug substances. Topics include pharmacologic properties of controlled drugs substances, their indications and appropriate use, and the New Jersey State licensure requirements related to prescribing controlled drug substances.

Psychopharmacology for APNs & RNs

This course will assist the psychiatric/mental health professional understand the neurobiological basis of psychiatric disorders and be able to apply the pharmacology of available medications to treatment strategies for these mental illnesses. The psychiatric disorders studied will include psychosis, depressive disorders, bipolar spectrum disorders, ADHD, and anxiety disorders. The mechanism of action, tolerability and safety profiles will be discussed.

Public Health Nursing Leadership Seminar

Learn about the principles and practices of leadership as they apply to the evolving trends in community and public health nursing. Reiki : Certification in Level 1 Attunement

This one-day course will certify you in Reiki level one attunement. A manual will be provided

History of Reiki:
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of energy healing and self-improvement which aims to treat the whole person, including body, emotions, mind and spirit . It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques. A very simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve our own and our patients' health and enhance quality of life.

RN Refresher Course

Shoulder Dystocia

Shoulder Dystocia is a true obstetric emergency. It is not predictable and no specific management has proven to be superior. The pathophysiology of Shoulder Dystocia relates to the impaction of the anterior fetal shoulder behind the maternal symphysis which prevents the completion of the birth process. Shoulder Dystocia is recognized when the birth does not occur by the usual methods; when gentle downward pressure on the fetal head fails to affect the birth of the shoulders; and when completion of the birth requires additional obstetric maneuvers. Shoulder Dystocia is a catastrophic obstetric emergency and a medicolegal nightmare.

Spanish for Healthcare Workers & Professionals

This course is for individuals who work in healthcare, and have contact with Spanish speaking people. This course provides introduction to Spanish, including colloquial terms that are commonly used in the clinical setting. It is designed to assist the provider to effectively communicate with Spanish speaking patients and associates.

Surveillance: Update for School Nurses

This two-hour seminar for school nurses working in elementary and secondary education will use a case-based approach to teach school nurses to identify the signs and symptoms of an impending epidemic in the school system.

Telehealth, Telenursing, Robotics, and Virtual modes of Healthcare Delivery

This presentation will provide an overview of the use of advanced technology in the community-based setting. Participants will discuss complex procedures employed to care for the acutely and critically ill patient at home and address the use of new telecommunication technologies.

Trauma Course (2-day course)

This two-day course is provides core-level knowledge required to care for the patient with traumatic injury. Topics include: mechanism of injury, thermal injury, fluid resuscitation, abdominal trauma, thoracic trauma, traumatic brain injury, spinal trauma, orthopedic and vascular injuries, and trauma in special populations. The course addresses nursing care for each subject area, including assessment, monitoring, and psychosocial care; medical and surgical intervention; diagnostic tests; and the use of specialized equipment.

Wound Closure/Suture Workshop

This course teaches wound assessment skills for nurses and promotes understanding of the wound healing process. It also covers various types of suture materials and indications for their use. Participants will gain hands-on practice of basic suturing techniques.

Women's Health Initiative Symposium 2009

Women’s Health has now been recognized as a specialty area. It has been accepted that the presentation, progress and outcome of disease are unique to women. Commonly accepted male symptomatology are not representative of the onset of disease in women. This Symposium will focus on Women’s Health with its close ties to the cultural role of women in diverse populations.
