Technology FAQ

The information on this page has changed significantly!!!
Please read carefully! (updated 8/14/09)

Due to industry and paradigm changes, SN will no longer be supporting one particular handheld for incoming students.  The last students that were required to purchase Lexi-Comp licenses were those that started classes in Summer 2009.  For students who have already purchased Palm TX handhelds and Lexi-Comp licenses, SN will continue to support and use the Palm TX and Lexi-Comp until this group graduates in September 2010.

Going forward, BSN and MSN students will be required to use Dynamed and EpocratesRX.  Both of these are currently available to UMDNJ students at no cost.

Students WILL however be required to have a PDA type device that is:

  • Compatible with Dynamed and EpocratesRX (see hardware compatibility lists below)
  • Capable of being used with the above in all clinical locations that the student will be assigned to

It will be the student’s responsibility to ensure that the device complies with the above and below requirements!

Examples:

An Apple iPod Touch would be an example of a good choice for device because it is compatible with both Dynamed and EpocratesRX.  It also stores the databases for both on the device itself and does not need access to the internet to look up information in the databases.

A Palm Centro would be a good example of a smartphone device because it is on both compatibility lists and the databases are stored on the device itself.  It does not need access to the internet to look up data.  Also, it is possible to turn off the phone portion and still use the PDA portion (also known as airplane mode on other devices).

A Blackberry smartphone would be an unsuitable device.  Even though a Blackberry is on the compatible devices list for both Dynamed and EpocratesRX, it requires the use of the internet to look up the databases.  It is also not possible to use PDA functions while having the phone turned off.  There is only one on/off control for all function on the device.
